About Esan West

Esan West local government area is domiciled in Edo state, Southsouth geopolitical division of Nigeria. The headquarters of the LGA are in the town of Ekpoma while the area consists of several towns and villages which includes Ogwa, Ujiogba, Urohi, Ukhun, Egoro. The estimated population of Esan West LGA is 190,000 inhabitants with the majority of the area’s dwellers being members of the Esan ethnic affiliation. The Esan language is primarily spoken in the area while Christianity is the widely practiced religion in the area. Notable landmarks in Esan West LGA include the Ambrose Alli University and the Nigerian post office Ekpoma.

Economy

Farming is a major economic activity in Esan west LGA with the area known for the cultivation of crops such as yam, cassava, plantain and banana. The area is also home to a number of markets such as the Royal market in Ekpoma, and the Amede market. Esan west LGA also hosts several private and public institutions, banks, hotels and relaxation spots.

Owing to the large population in Ekpoma being the economic hub of Esan West bolstered by the unending influx of students, virtually all kinds of businesses thrive in the university town. There are many hotels/eateries, book shops, table water factories, business centres and other academic related enterprises in the town.

Geography

Esan West covers a total area of 502 square kilometres and has an average temperature of 28 degrees. The average humidity of the area is put at 69 percent while the average wind speed in the LGA is 9 km/h. Esan West LGA falls under the Tropical savannah climate and witnesses two major seasons which are the rainy and the dry seasons.

Political Structure

Esan West is made up of ten wards and it has one seat at the Edo State House of Assembly.

Development

The foundation for the development of Ekpoma/Esan West at large was laid by her illustrious son Late Prof. Ambrose Alli during his tenure as the governor of defunct Bendel State which was evidenced by the siting of a university in the town and the provision of roads and other public amenities in the area.

Esan West is the academic hub of Esan Land. It has the following notable higher  institutions of  learning:
